Air Quality

School Business Community Transport Planning Projects

We have undertaken Mayors Air Quality Fund education programmes at schools in the boroughs of Southwark, Islington, Haringey, Hackney, Redbridge, Croydon and Sutton. These have been evaluated to have a proven impact on travel behaviour and awareness of air quality issues. Our sessions are fronted by former BBC weather lead Helen Young and qualified teachers – we deliver interactive whole school assemblies, classroom sessions, workshops and outdoor activities that serve to engage the whole school community. Activities often include tree and other planting schemes, theatre in education, citizen science and campaign work. We work with pupils to carry out science investigations into their local air quality and ensure that each programme fits the unique set of circumstances for each school and its locality.

Air Quality Projects for Business

Our approach to engaging businesses centres on the implementation of the Modeshift STARSfor online travel planning and accreditation scheme to incentivise and recognise excellence amongst workplaces that commit to reducing their emissions through transport. We specifically focus on empowering businesses and equipping employees with the tools that they need to bring about sustained shift in travel behaviour.

The PWLC team has extensive experience in developing, implementing and monitoring Delivery & Servicing Plans (DSPs) for businesses, particularly as part of the development planning process. We have developed and approved DSPs for a broad range of planning proposals and these will typically sit alongside business travel plans, working in conjunction with one another to help reduce the environmental impact of servicing and encouraging sustainable travel behaviour.

Air Quality Projects for Communities

We deliver large scale Personalised Travel Planning (PTP) initiatives across residential areas, businesses, community events and other establishments such as Job Centres. Adopting the principles of Motivational Interviewing, we can recruit, train and support a team of PTP professionals to deliver an impactful programme that brings about real change in people’s travel habits. Greening and planting community engagement projects are also some ways we have been involved in raising air quality issues with local residents and business communities while helping to improve local air quality.

Air Quality Projects for Transport Planning

We have a dedicated contingent of highways and transport professionals that recognise the need for better air quality. In London we are working with Lambeth Council on their borough wide 20mph limit, which has far reaching positive implications for behaviour change. We have also been involved in work in the UAE to introduce Low Emission Vehicles reflecting a drive towards a societal shift in attitude towards traditional vehicle use and the environment.

The PWLC team has extensive experience in the development planning industry and have worked on major housing, retail and commercial projects to promote sustainable travel behaviour and minimise environmental impacts during the construction stage and following implementation. Projects include a new football stadium in south London, a ‘Next at Home’ store and a new B & Q store.
