Paula Edwards – STARS Officer Sheffield
Having been a lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University for 5 years, teaching in the field of Sport and Community Development and the Sociology of Sport, I have combined my passion for sport and the environment with my academic interest in the study of society. I have developed knowledge and understanding of the practical and theoretical issues surrounding sport, physical activity and community development. My specific interests lie in identifying barriers to participation and exploring ways in which these can be overcome, in order to promote healthy lifestyles, improve self-esteem and wellbeing and contribute to tackling environmental and conservation issues.
I currently work as a Sustrans Active Travel Officer alongside my STARS Officer role and I have previously worked as a Park Ranger, working to engage with local communities to increase participation in outdoor activities; to promote the benefits of active lifestyle choices; increase awareness of conservation issues and increase community cohesion. I also have experience of Safeguarding, having worked for the local authority in the child protection legal field.
As an outdoor pursuits and team building events instructor, holding SPA and Cave Leader training, I have experience of working with children and young people in an outdoor environment. I am a member of British Cycling, holding a Ride Leader Level 1 qualification which allows me to volunteer as a Breeze Ride leader, focusing on breaking down barriers and encouraging more women into cycling.
